Heartbeat

It's in those eyes
I see your heart
And feel it beat
My own apart.
You hear it stop,
I'll make it start.

I've been trusted-
You'll not regret it.
I am blessed
And I'm indebted
This is my joy-
I'll not forget it.

I have your heart
I'll hold it fast
I am not one
To make you ask
I've got it, love
And I will last.

Don't ever think
I'm unaware
That hearts are handled,
Held with care.
It's in my hands
And safely there.

Please, please don't
Give just a piece-
Give me your all
Or mine will cease.
Those eyes- they just
Don't give me peace.

I know there's more,
And I hold out
For you, when you
Shake off your doubt
And come to know
What I'm about.

Your heart is fragile
Yet I'm prepared
To feel my own
Completely tear
For the sake of yours.
I do not care.

I stand before you
Begging, broken
Knowing his will
Has been spoken,
Has proven you
Are no mere token.

This heart I'm given
Will not break.
It does not matter
What it takes;
I've given all
Just for its sake.

Your heart! Your eyes!
They're mine to hold.
This blessing seems
To me like gold
I heard it beating once-
I'm sold.

So many fail you
They run,
They leave your heart
All torn, undone,
But please trust me
To be the one

To feel it beating
With my own.
Please believe me,
I have known
It was never meant
To beat alone.

postscript
I wrote this months ago. It is almost a response to "Real Love," if any of you remember that one. I will love deeply, and I want my friends to know that. I will not be a shallow friend, nor my love be conditional. I just hope my friends would be willing to say the words of this poem even to me.
