So you're afraid.
Well, so am I.
In different ways,
In different eyes.
Afraid of me?
Don't be, I pray you.
I promised once
To ne'er betray you.
I fear but one:
That is my Love.
I am redeemed,
And that's enough.
Oh, I don't know
The step ahead.
That is my only
Source of dread.
But you-- you fear
What you need not:
(Your heart beheld,
Your spirit sought.)
I wish you knew
Just how free
You'd be if you
Could trust in me.
Ah but there's
The rub, I know.
First a prisoner,
Then free to go?
That makes no sense.
It builds my fear.
But walls break down
As you draw near.
So you're afraid.
I wish you weren't.
All your life
You have been burnt
By giving hearts
Away too fast.
Run from fear!
Let go the past!
You are afraid,
And I am too.
Afraid I'll never
Be for you
What I could be.
But fear won't win:
Someday you will
Let someone in.
postscript
So many poems lately about the depth of love. But I won't give up on those who fear it.
