DFC XXI. Monotetra: Not This

In purple dressed and crowned with light
The people marvel. At the sight
Of you in splendor we delight;
This is your right, this is your right.

To grow so old and die in bed
In peace with grey upon your head;
This is the life you should have led--
Not this instead, not this instead.

You forfeited your crown and throne
You humbly lived and died alone.
It was your love as you have shown--
Made us your own, made us your own.
