Stealing like a frozen thief
The winter tiptoes in,
Cooling fervent, bold belief
And undermining sin.
Come winter chill: I know your will.
It wakes my sorrow, makes me ill.
Come winter chill,
Come winter chill,
I have the strength to hate you still.
You bite like wolfish jaws of cold
And overwhelm my breath.
You shorten days, your arms enfold
To slowly welcome death.
I hate thee so, as seasons go,
And wish no sight of fallen snow.
I hate thee so,
I hate thee so,
And every year this hate shall grow.
Hie thee back to winters gone
And stay there all my life.
Your constant coming, pounding on
Destroys me like a knife.
I'm done with you, and autumn too,
And all the pain you put me through.
I'm done with you,
I'm done with you;
Let spring come back and make things new.
postscript
Can you tell how much I hate winter? DFC day five: the form is trijan refrain. I sort of based it on the prompt picture: the fire in the ice here is my burning hatred in winter. Hahaha. Ahem. Sorry--I don't usually write so negative, but this is also somewhat tongue-in-frozen cheek. I also swore I would never use the phrase "like a knife" or "tears like blood" or anything so horribly cliche, but I thought it fitting here, in a poem full of things I hate. Winter is the worst.
