I once heard a song sung
That I locked inside my heart:
It's the lullaby of safety,
Though I learned it just in part.
It was whispered through the tree boughs
When I, so young and small,
Wrapped myself in safety,
So assured I wouldn't fall.
And I think I've heard it sung
In the stillness, by my bed,
And though it comes just faintly,
This is what it said:
"I see you as you're sleeping,
And I'll always know your name.
In all the things you are and do,
I'll love you still the same."
I hope you hear the song sung
As it's whispered through the trees.
I hope you know you're loved, too,
By the God who always sees.
I'll sing this song forever, too:
My little one, please know
My arms are made for safety,
No matter where you go.
I'll teach this song to you, child,
And I hope that you will keep
These words inside your heart, too,
As you lie there and sleep:
I see you as you're sleeping,
And I'll always know your name.
In all the things you are and do,
I'll love you just the same.
I will be your lullaby
When darkness comes too fast.
And God will keep and guide us both
Until the storm is past.
I pray no fear come near you,
And I pray you will hold on.
Precious one, He loves you,
And will hold you till the dawn.
I once heard the lullaby
And it held me through the night.
And so I sing them over you:
And He brings morning light.
We see you as you're sleeping
And we'll always know your name.
In all the things you are and do,
We will love you still the same.
postscript
I wrote a lullaby. Call me sentimental if you like. But I would love to sing this to my kids someday. Simple things kids need to know: that they are loved, that they are seen, that they have a name, and it is KNOWN by God.
