I laid out in the sun today
And felt you next to me.
I stopped to think that by the time
We each could really see
How much we needed one another
We each will have moved on.
I fear that I will love you more
After you are gone.
We've no time for arguments;
Still less for silent glances.
I don't want to see time's hurried pace:
I'd rather see its dances.
So then, I'll neither look upon
Your faults and feel unloved,
Nor continue in my own, because
There isn't time enough.
Though you wound me, I recall
That I have sinned no less.
So in the meantime I am yours.
The poet said it best:
'Tis better to have loved and lost
Than never to have loved at all.
I'll love you, then; shall we
Together take the fall?
When I laid out in the sun today
I thought of our time left.
No matter what you do to me,
Without you, I'm bereft.
postscript
Sigh. Just because I wrote this does not mean I have perfected this attitude. I'm working on it.
