April 26--Shadows Grow Long

I'll wait till the shadows are long on the wall
And no other sound is allowed in this room
But the whisper of curtains on light summer breeze
And I'll let your embrace chase away all my gloom.
I'll sit here. I'll think, "what have I done
To deserve the embrace of a love such as this?"
And as if you could hear every thought in my head
You hold me still tighter and offer a kiss.
When the clouds fight with sunshine all over the sky
And the dark on the walls are all mottled and strange
I'll fade into you; your chest rises and falls
And your heartbeat goes on without any change,
And I'm safe. I am here. And the shadows can grow
For all that I care. They've no hold on me.
Not when you do-- no, not when you do.
And it's all I can ask of you: let me be free.
So then, in a moment when shadows grow long
And the sound of your breathing is all I can hear,
You prove how profoundly your love hems me in
And I'll fade into you though it take me a year.
