April 20-Not a Fish

The cat peers into the water dish
And imagines she sees therin a fish,
And the bear peers into the glassy stream
And insists the fish is not a dream,
And the whale peers up in the folds of the water
And sees with his eye the fisherman's daughter
As she takes the fish and removes the head;
And the bear sees that the fish is dead
And the cat with her dish is thus deceived
For though not in her dish, the head's received
With greedy paws and a selfish wink
For the whale doth wail deep in the drink,
And the bear can't bear to be so betrayed-
And that's how a nonsense poem is made.
