April 19--An Ideal Man

I look for ears that hear the voice of God
And hold to hands that fold themselves in prayer.
I meet the gaze of one who sees His grace;
Wait for the mouth that will His witness bear.
I long for arms that hold the fear at bay
And follow feet that go where God has led.
I hear a laugh that, filled with true delight
Represents a life which once was dead.
My restless heart knows not where this is found
But leaps not up at false attempts of love.
My mind desires one of equal worth,
And keeps its wearied thoughts on things above.
My ears are searching now for one voice only,
And my hands fold patiently in quiet rest.
My gaze is fixed upon the grace of God
And my mouth will utter only what is best.
My arms, not held, grow stronger for their tasks;
My feet will never wander from His way.
I cling to God who bears me up for now,
Knowing that ere long there comes a day
When you and I must stand before our King--
All of ourselves in brokenness, undone,
With ears and eyes and hearts that sought the other,
And swear our separate selves as only one.

postscript
A friend and I were discussing the ideal man. We have some very different ideas of what we look for, but there are some important things that are essential, whatever his taste in music, literature, or, in her case, cowboy boots.
