4.21: Sonnet for a Sonnet's Sake

The words spring forth in meter bold and bright
Required of a sonnet. And the rhyme
Is alternating couplets, formed just right
To take the reader forth in measured time.
Love is the common topic of this feat
Of literary greatness. Shakespeare's choice.
But other times the weather is more meet
And praise of summer's raised in hearty voice.
At times when inspiration's lacking charm
A simple sonnet bows, holds out its hand
And begs the poet dance. 'Twill cause no harm,
And those who read will quickly understand
The poet writes five iambs in a line
Because no other topic comes to mind.
