But soft! What pause arrests my eyes
While bringing worlds to reconcile
My understanding of what lies
Beneath the outward rank and file
Of ordered earth and naked space?
It causes time to stand aloof.
It is unkind to rush the pace
For wandering souls who search for truth.
A gap exists between the sun
And earth, and furthermore the land
And hills between the rivers run,
And runners soon are made to stand,
And every exhalation needs
An inhalation like a pause
And every break in skin will bleed.
This is the case, I see, because
There is a gap between the brain
And body and between the soul
And all of those. and here, again
The greatest state and chiefest goal
My heart desires rests in you.
And you are one and three and all
Without a pause in thinking through
The gaps left open in the fall
From grace to pitted, punctured day.
So softly heartbeats, blinks, and breath
Leave a roadblock in my way
In broken day and night, till death.

Everything comes and goes in phases, but one.
