13. Beyond the Gods

You are the God whose love defeated Hell,
You are the God who loves us mortal men
To greater lengths than any culture tells
Of its own gods. Your love exceeds again
What any text explains in simple words.
You live beyond the pages of a book
Or stories from the tongues of old and gray.
These gods who lived like mortals, sinned, and took
From men, demanding more, and spurned the thought
Of beauty in a friendship, love and trust
With men. But you gave everything and fought
To make us right with you, to dwell with us.
And hell stood with them--you broke wide its jaws
And fought for those who spurned you without cause.

postscript
NaPo day 13! The crown of sonnets continues. I struggle to find aspects of the character of God I haven't already written about. You know, off the top of my head. Maybe I should crack open a theology book.
